TENERIFE LOS RODEOS AIRPORT (TFN) INFORMATION

The public airport of Tenerife North is one of the major international airports serving the Canary Islands in Spain, as it located on Tenerife, the largest of the Canaries. It is one of two airports on the island, the other being the South Airport, which is the larger of the two, handling around eleven million passengers per year. The North is mainly an inter-island hub, providing connections to all seven Canary Islands, as well to the mainland of the country, and is located approximately 11 km, or 6.8 miles from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital city. The airport was formerly known as the Los Rodeos, and is also recognized by its official code of TFN. The ICAO code is listed as GCXO.

The other six Canary Islands lie nearby Tenerife, with Gran Canaria just to the east, and Fuerteventura and Lanzarote a little further away. To the west of Tenerife, are La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro, the three smaller Canary Islands. The capital city of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, is located on the north-eastern shoreline of the island, and has one of the busiest ports in the country. It is also a major tourist resort. Tenerife's smaller airport is situated in the municipality of San Cristobal de la Laguna, and is well connected to all other areas of the island by the major TF-1 and TF-5 motorways. The main access road is the TF-5, but has it has also received a new access road for the exclusive use of passengers. The new road is 2,900 meters in length, with four lanes - two lanes travelling in each direction.

While Tenerife South Airport handles the majority of international flights to and from the island, Tenerife Norths traffic is mainly of the scheduled domestic nature, of which 53% are connecting flights to the other Canary Islands. There are also many flights to the rest of the airports in Spain, such as Barcelona, Madrid, Girona and Malaga. The busiest route handled is to Madrid-Barajas, with over a million passengers per year, and around 40 flights per day. The airline companies present include Binter Canarias & NAYSA, with flights to El Hierro, Gran Canaria, La Palma, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, Iberia, flying to Madrid and Barcelona. Islas Airways is another airline company serving the other Canaries, and Air Europa travels to Spanish destinations, as well as to Miami. Vueling Airlines is another popular choice for flights to mainland Spain.

Traffic at Tenerife North has steadily increased over the years, and the airport has handled over four million passengers per annum since 2006. In the year 2000, just under two and half million passengers traveled through the airport, and by 2004, passenger numbers had reached over three million. 2017 was Tenerife North Airport's busiest year, with 4,704,863 passengers and over 61,000 flight operations.

Plans for the airfield at Los Rodeos began when, in the summer of 1929, Lufthansa announced that it would be flying from Berlin to Tenerife, and a provisional aerodrome was hastily prepared to accommodate the flight. However, the arrival of the flight was delayed until 5 December, when it finally took off from Seville to Tenerife. The location of the airport was somewhat undecided for a number of months, but Los Rodeos was eventually approved. Plans for improving the airfield's facilities were made, and by 1946, a couple of hangars, a passenger terminal and a paved runway of 800 meters, or 2,625 feet had been built. The airport was now also officially opened for domestic and international traffic. The runway's lighting was improved and was once again lengthened to 2,400 meters by 1953. It was also equipped with an air-ground radio, enabling night operations. Over the next few years, further navigational aids were introduced, and more parking spaces for aircraft were provided.

Unfortunately, one of the main drawbacks of Tenerife North's location was often conditions of heavy fog, and this turned out to be one of the main causes for the disastrous accident in 1977. Two airplanes, a PanAm and a KLM Boeing 747 collided on the runway. The total fatality of the accident was 583 people, making it one of the worst accidents in aviation history. This incident encouraged a new airport to built along the southern coast, where its sea-level position would avert the occurrence of foggy conditions. The new site is the South Airport, or Reina Sofia. Nonetheless, the North one continues its service for domestic and international air traffic, and today boasts a new passenger terminal building, with 47 check-in desks and 16 boarding gates. Ten of the check-in desks and six of the boarding gates are used exclusively for inter-island flights. The majority of the inter-island flight departures are handled from the ground floor of the terminal, while other departures originate from the top floor of the building. Passengers will arrive at Tenerife North Airport on the mezzanine level, via one of six airbridges, and proceed to the ground floor level where the six baggage reclaim carousels are located.

Tenerife North Airport is open to the public from 06:00 to 23:00, and its main operating hours are from 07:15 to 22:00. As an international destination, it is well equipped with banking and currency exchange services, a VIP lounge, medical services, a lost property office and a wide selection of shopping and dining opportunities. The terminal building is also fully accessible for disabled passengers.
