Tenerife North Airport handles over four million passengers per year, and is one of the two international airports serving the island of Tenerife, which is the largest of the famous Canary Islands. There are also many departure flights available to mainland Spain. Tenerife North Airport is fully equipped for the needs of all departing passengers, and is served by a number of airline companies. Passengers can also reach the airport by means of public transport.

The busiest route from Tenerife North Airport is to Madrid-Barajas, on the mainland. There are over 40 flights per day for this destination, which is traveled by over a million passengers per annum. The airline companies flying from Tenerife to Madrid are Iberia and Air Europa. These airline companies also serve the destinations of Seville, Barcelona, Leon, Bilbao and Malaga. Vueling Airlines is another popular carrier with departures to the Spanish airports of Seville, Malaga and Barcelona. The airline carrier which offers flights to the other Canary Islands is Binter Canarias & NAYSA, as well as Islas Airways. Alternative destinations from Tenerife North Airport include Caracus, Alicante and Helsinki, by the airline carriers of Finnair, Iberia operated by Air Nostrum and Santa Barbara Airlines.

The majority of international flights are handled by Tenerife's other airport, known as the Tenerife South Airport, located, as its name suggests, to the far south of the island. This airport is slightly larger than Tenerife North, handling just over eleven million passengers per year. Together, these two airports are very important gateways to the island, and handle over eleven million passengers per annum. Tenerife North Airport was formerly known as the Los Rodeos Airport, and Tenerife South's previous name was the Reina Sofia Airport. TFN is still the official airport code for Tenerife North.

Passengers departing from Tenerife North Airport can arrive in their own vehicles, as there are adequate parking facilities available. The two main motorways leading to the airport are the TF-1 from the south of the island, and the TF-5, which is the main airport access road, as well as the road which runs along the northern coastline of Tenerife. There are a number of buses which provide transport to the airport as well. They travel from the island's capital city, Santa Cruz, as well as from a number of other northern towns, such as Puerto de la Cruz. The buses of Tenerife are all operated by the company TITSA, and are a reliable means of transportation. Taxis are also available from all towns in Tenerife, and although always more expensive than the bus, are often a preferred way to arrive in time for a departure flight from Tenerife North Airport.

Once at the airport, passengers will find a multi-leveled terminal building, which has departure facilities on both the ground floor and the upper level of the building. Airline tickets can also be purchased from the ticket sales offices on the ground floor, and the check-in desks are located here as well. The ten boarding gates on the upper floor are for departures to a variety of destinations, while the six gates located on the ground floor are used exclusively for inter-island travel. In total, there are 36 check-in desks, and an extra desk for special baggage, and ten check-in desks used exclusively for inter-island flights. The airport terminal of Tenerife North is open to the public from 06:00 to 23:00, and its main operating hours are from 07:15 to 22:00. later flights may be accommodated if specially requested by the airline company.

Similar to all other Spanish Airports, Tenerife North has very strict security control procedures to ensure the safety of all passengers, as well as airport and airline staff members. Passengers will need to pass through security check points as in all other airports. The same regulations surrounding the carrying of liquids in hand luggage apply. In hand luggage, passengers must separate their various liquid substances into containers of not more than 100 ml, and carry a total of not more than one liter. These containers should then be placed into a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag, and handed to the security officers for inspection. At Tenerife North Airport, these bags can be purchased at the Canariensis shop, located in the check-in area. Passengers may still carry unlimited quantities of liquids in hold luggage, and may carry any and all types of liquids on board which were bought from shops located within the secure boarding area. Passengers may also bring unlimited quantities of baby food, baby milk or special dietary foods on board the airplane which will be needed for the duration of the flight.

Passengers scheduled for a departure flight from Tenerife North Airport should check all finer details regarding luggage specifications and check-in times with their airline company, as the requirements for the various carriers tend to differ. However, in general, two luggage items of not more than 20 kg each are allowed per passenger and an hour is the approximate time before a domestic flight in which to arrive at the airport. Passengers who require special assistance should arrive at least two hours ahead of departure, and will be able to meet an airport staff member for help with the check-in and security procedures. Further assistance can be arranged with the airline company, or with a staff member of the airport. Various facilities are also available for disabled passengers, such as adapted toilet areas and lifts to upper floors.
